Tip of the Month: Gamification to Improve Customer Engagement

Gamification utilizes elements of games to build both customer engagement and motivates them to make more purchases in your store.

In last month’s Tip of the Month, we talked about how to use loyalty programs to bring customers back to your store and the popularity of this tactic among businesses.  So, in a market where consumers have many options, how can your business stand out from your competitor’s loyalty programs?  How about spicing it up with gamification?

Gamification utilizes elements of games to build both customer engagement and motivates them to make more purchases in your store.  We often see simple games within stores or near stalls which are used to draw crowds.  For example, a shooting hoop competition to win a free key chain.

What is Gamification?

Human beings are hardwired to want to win and are naturally motivated by rewards. Customers naturally gain a feeling of being rewarded after a certain action, and it triggers a behavior where it motivates them to act.  Gamification will allow customers to engage with your business on an emotional level, rather than a simple transactional level.   Here are some benefits you main gain by adding a bit of gamification:

  • Drive brand awareness
  • Gain more knowledge about your customers by interacting with them
  • Increase interaction for engagement
  • Motivate them to interact with your store
  • Create fun experiences to leave a positive impression

How to Apply Gamification to Your Business

There are many different ways you can implement gamification into your small business. For example, hosting a game where consumers try and guess how many items are in a jar to win a reward or sharing a sales link to earn credits or bonuses.  Ultimately, the golden rule for gamification is to go small and quick.  Engaging your customers with small and quick rewards that allow them to redeem prizes instantly, or on their second or third visit, will make them feel rewarded and engaged.

Alrighty, it’s your turn again!  Remember, go with something small and quick.  We can’t wait to be inspired by your gamification strategy!

Happy marketing!
